The HF ARC-5 receivers are a common sight on the online auction sites today, yet the R28 VHF variant still remains fairly unknown. This receiver was quite different from its HF counterparts for a number of reasons. Aside from being quite different in appearance, the units were mainly used for short range aircraft-to-ground or aircraft-to-aircraft communication. Another significant difference was that they used four remotely controlled crystal locked receive frequencies, selected by operating a remote control box with four push buttons.
In keeping with the ARC-5 HF receivers, the R28 had a matching VHF transmitter with much the same appearance.
